Rhiannon Giddens and Sam Beam (Iron & Wine)

Rhiannon Giddens and Sam Beam (from Iron & Wine) covered Bob Dylan's 'Forever Young'.

The song was produced by Joe, and is now available as a digital download on Itunes (Not in Europe)  and the Nonesuch store.

The song is featured on the series finale of NBC's Parenthood .

Rhiannon Giddens on facebook :
"It was an absolute pleasure to work with Sam Beam (Iron & Wine) for the first time on this cover of Bob Dylan's Forever Young - and always great to work with Joe Henry and his group of fabulous musicians...."

In my Humble opinion ? It's a great version. Well done, Rhiannon, Sam and Joe.

Support a new JH produced project !

Over the last few years, small bands tend to make use of crowdfunding to get their music funded.
Kickstarter is 1 of the most familiar organisations for musicians.

Now this way of funding has reached also to a project involving Joe Henry.

Birds of Chicago want to record their second studio album, and it would be a dream come true, if Joe would produce the next album. The album will be called 'Real Midnight'

"...When it came time to choose a producer, there was always one name at the top of the dream lists we scratched out in various coffee houses and bars:  Joe Henry…"

And together with Joe Henry, off course, there is also....

"...we knew Joe would be perfect for us… We are incredibly thrilled and honoured to be working with him and engineer extraordinaire, Ryan Freeland..."

Recordings are planned to be done beginning of february, and alongside the band : Jay Bellerose, and Patrick Warren will play, and maybe also.....

"...The first week of February, the Birds of Chicago family will be camped in South Pasadena recording our 2nd studio album, Real Midnight.  Our band will consist of the BOC names you’ve come to know - Chris Merrill, Drew Lindsay, Dan Abu-Absi, Michelle McGrath, Joe Faulhaber, Nick Chambers... We are also very excited to be working with two of Joe Henry's musical family - the great Jay Bellerose on drums and percussion, and Patrick Warren on organ. There may also be a surprise guest or two..."

American Originals performance

This weekend were the American Originals shows in Cincinnati.

Of everything I can find, it had to be a fantastic weekend, and a great show. Read the reviews for an entire idea of the evening, and the wonderful input of all the different artists. It will not surprise you that I'm going to keep info focused on Joe, but all the musicians deserve your attention, and most of them are no strangers to Joe when it comes to productional work.

Joe Performed 2 solo songs : Oh! Susanna and Aura Lee. (which he also contributed for the 'Divided and United' project.)

He also sang along with all the artists in the last song Camptown Races.

Outgoing Signals
.....one of the best songs of the night.  Yes, Joe Henry finally returned for his second song, a cover of George Poulton’s “Aura Lee”.....

cincinnati Enquirer
Henry came out to Foster's "O Susannah!" which was penned in Cincinnati, the first of 200 songs to come. The singer's original delivery included swooping into the notes and adding twang to his words. Later, he crooned "Aura Lee" after noting that Elvis had used the tune for "Love Me Tender."

The encore, which had to be repeated when the audience demanded even more, was Foster’s “Camptown Races,” which brought together the entire company, including Russell on spoons. Principal trumpeter Matthew Ernst delivered a blazing solo here, and the audience could not help but clap along at the end.

Pictures

Lots of pictures to be found on Cincinnati Pop's facebook.

They even have a rehearsal clip.

Cincygroove has a lot of pictures on their site.

I personally loved this one made by Over the Rhine :
Don't forget to read their wonderful words.

Feel free to share your own experiences of 1 of those evenings.

These concerts were recorded for a live album. I'll keep you informed on that one off course.

Update January 28

Bassplayer Artie Werner also performed on this event, and shared his story on Bluegrass today.

Congratulations to John Morris Russell and the Cincinnati Pops organization for creating this fantastic event. The banjo truly does sound great with an orchestra.

We also remember that the album release is planned for next fall.

Greetings,
Stefan

Bass player Tim Drummond passed away

My condolences to everyone close to Tim.

Tim Drummond toured and recorded with artists like Bob Dylan, James Brown, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Joe Cocker,........ And the list goes on.

He played on Joe's album 'Murder of Crows' .

Joe paid his respects on his facebook with the following words.

"very sad this hour to learn of the passing of my old and dear friend, the great bassist tim drummond. his sprawl was immense, having played with a diversity of seminal artists --from james brown to conway twitty, through to ry cooder and neil young, and in the latter pair's most significant periods. as well, he gave up and held down gospel's supreme and funky authority in service to bob dylan, when gospel was the scrambling poet's preferred delivery system.
tim was the bassist on my own second album, "murder of crows" in 1988, and did in that moment what no musician i had long admired had yet done: he treated me like a peer. and it changed me.
rest easy, timmy. put on those fur slippers and glide."

Your music makes that we will not forget. Sleep Well Tim.

American Originals details

As previously posted, Joe will perform, alongside Rosanne Cash, Over the Rhine, The Comet Bluegrass All-Stars, Aoife O’Donovan and Dom Flemons, during Cincinnati pop orchestra's event called 'American Originals'. These concerts take place on January 23, 24 and 25.

Jauary 1th, and there are some details available for this event.

  • American Originals celebrates the remarkable legacy of Stephen Foster as well as the music of 18th century America that created the foundation of our nation’s musical ethos. These are songs that define “classic”. They have stood the test of time and are still sung in anthems, pop songs and covers across the country and around the world, though often folks have no idea they were created by a man who only lived to 37 and died penniless in complete obscurity.

First of all, maybe the most exciting info. These concerts will be recorded for a live album.

But there is also info regarding the time schedule, and the expected program. Find out everything on their page
I personally have my prediction on what Joe will bring us.... but let's not get into that.

get your tickets !

And for those interested : You can also attend a pre-concert bourbon tasting on the 23th and 24th.

Greetings and best wishes,
Stefan.
